Phelan Green (Capre Town, South Africa) announced through its clean fuels subsidiary Phelan eFuels that it has selected honeywellRenewable fuel process technology for its planned Electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (ESAF) facility at Saldanha Bay, Western Cape, South Africa.
Felon will deploy eFuels Honeywell UOP's Fischer Tropsch (FT) Unicracking™ process technologyWhich uses FT fluid and wax made from CO2 To create ESAF Which complies with aviation industry standards.
Chairman Pascal Phelan said, “We selected Honeywell's Fischer Tropsch unicracking process technology because it offers a proven, bankable route to producing sustainable aviation fuel at large scale.” “This project is a major milestone for Phelan Green and South Africa’s emerging e-fuel economy, and demonstrates our commitment to industrial growth, job creation and innovative energy projects that lead to emissions reductions.”
The new facility is a core part of the Phelan Green Hydrogen Project, a R47 billion (approximately US$2.5 billion) private investment that has been formally recognized as a strategic green industrial development at the national level by the South African government. Once operational, the project will be one of the world's first commercial-scale ESAF production facilities that will supply over 140,000 tonnes of ESAF to the EU and UK markets.
“Honeywell’s technologies are designed to enable scalable, efficient and flexible production of low-carbon fuels,” said Rajesh Gattupalli, president of Honeywell UOP. “In this case, our Fischer Tropsch unicracking process technology will help support Phelan eFuels’ goal of encouraging commercial-scale sustainable aviation fuel production in South Africa.”
Construction of the Saldanha Bay facility will begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will support thousands of local jobs over several phases, helping to establish the country as a competitive export hub for next generation aviation fuels.
