West Jordan, Utah (abc4) – A family from Utah is working to help provide functioning bathrooms to a school in South Africa. To make this transformation possible, they are asking the community to help raise funds for the project.
Angela Rigby and her family are on a mission to help their son Brennan do good for the community he's come to love. Angela's son Brennan has almost completed his mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He has been serving in South Africa for almost two years and during this time he has fallen in love with this part of the world.
Before he comes home to Utah, he wants to do something for the people he loves. The family thought they could help a school in the area he particularly loved. So, Brennan visited the school to see what he could do. Originally, they thought they could make school packs and help add playground equipment.
“When they visited the school they found they didn't have working toilets – 1,400 children go to the school and they didn't have working toilets,” Angela said.
This led to the South Africa School Project – the Rigby family was going to renovate the bathrooms for this school.
“We just want to give them the dignity to use the toilet, wash their hands, and get back to learning,” Angela added.
Brennan and his project manager in South Africa have worked to obtain approvals and permits for construction. While that is completed, they have started by installing a water pump on school property.
Crews will then replace 28 toilets in six different bathrooms.
Construction crews are already working on the project, but the Rigby family needs a little more help to complete the project.
'This is something we can do to change a small corner of the world,' Angela said.
Angela and her husband will travel to South Africa to pick up Brennan in June. While they are there they will see prepared bathrooms and give each child in the school a school pack.
