2026 budget speech The statement made by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana appears to be at odds with the scientific and clinical evidence emerging daily from public health facilities. The treasury allocated R21.3 billion to support the employment of doctors and R26 billion to HIV/AIDS programmes. These are important steps for our health system. Yet, there is no dedicated funding stream to tackle the non-communicable disease (NCD) crisis facing the country, writes Dr Patrick Ngasa Pioti, co-founder of the University of Pretoria Diabetes Research Center and chair of the Diabetes Alliance for Health-e News.

During his 2026 budget speech, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said municipalities are badly run risk If they do not improve their performance then budgets are cut as the national government shifts from “monitoring” to “active structural intervention” to improve local government finances.
