On 1 July 2026, Johan Rupert's Remgro finalized the purchase of Mediclinic. The process began in December 2025, but it took months and considerable financial effort to complete.

The purchase gives the South African billionaire a major stake in South Africa's privatized healthcare industry.

Previously, Remgro and IHL had split ownership 50-50 between two companies: Swiss-based Hirslanden and South Africa's Mediclinic International.

But as part of the deal, IHL will acquire Remgro's stake in Hirslanden, and Remgro will acquire IHL's stake in Mediclinic.
