South Africa has deployed the military several times in recent years to deal with outbreaks of crime and disorder, including in 2021, when riots and looting in two provinces sparked by the imprisonment of former President Jacob Zuma and frustration over COVID-19 lockdowns led to the death of more than 350 people.
