JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African anti-corruption investigators have arrested 12 senior police officers on graft and fraud charges, prosecutors said Wednesday.

The officers later appeared in a court in the capital Pretoria.

The arrests come as South African police continue to investigate allegations of high-ranking corruption. The investigation was ordered by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who also suspended the police minister last year.

A second parliamentary inquiry is also looking into claims that senior police officers had corrupt links with alleged crime bosses and in some cases allegedly received money from them in exchange for benefits.

The National Prosecuting Authority's anti-corruption investigation unit said in a statement that the arrest of the 12 officers was related to an alleged corrupt contract to provide health and welfare services to police officers. A 13th person, a company director, was also arrested, it said.
