It said jobs were lost in many sectors of the economy.
The Stats SA survey shows that between March 2025 and March 2026, full-time employment declined by 48,000 jobs, while part-time employment fell by 73,000 jobs.
Statistician Matlapane Masupe said gross income also declined between December and March.
“This was due to declines in food industries, manufacturing, community services, trade, construction, electricity and transportation.”
Economist Jenny Rossouw said the job losses were due to poor economic policy.
“This is a clear signal that the economic policies implemented by the ANC (African National Congress) and implemented within the national unity government from 2024 do not serve the best interests of South Africans.”
Rossouw said that South Africa needs growth-oriented policies that allow the private sector to expand economically with minimal government interference.
