South Africa's youth unemployment crisis has deepened, with almost half of young people now without work, according to the latest official labor figures.
Statistics SA's quarterly labor force survey shows that the youth unemployment rate, which includes people aged 15 to 34, rose to 45.8% in the first quarter of 2026.
This represents an increase of 2.0 percentage points over the previous quarter, driven by rising job losses and fewer young people entering employment.
