The South African Insurance Association has warned the public about the dangers and insurance risks associated with storing fuel at home.

This comes as some consumers have started storing large quantities of petrol amid uncertainty over future fuel supplies.

Rising prices of petrol and diesel have also contributed to increasing fuel hoarding.

SAIA technical expert Mosidi Shomang said municipalities only allow up to 25 liters of fuel to be stored at home, mainly for small appliances such as lawn mowers.

He warned that exceeding the permitted limit is against the rules and can have serious consequences.

He also highlighted that insurers may reject claims if illegal or non-compliant fuel storage causes damage.

The association advises residents not to store more than 25 liters of petrol, keep it in well-ventilated areas and keep it away from ignition sources and electrical appliances.

SAIA continues to urge the public to prioritize safety and follow the rules to avoid unnecessary risks.
