JOHANNESBURG – The youngest son of former Zimbabwean leader Robert Mugabe appeared in a South African court on Monday (Feb 23), charged with attempted murder after last week he shot and wounded a gardener at the Johannesburg mansion where Mugabe's son was living.

Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe was not asked to file the petition. The case against him and the second suspect was adjourned until March 3 to allow further investigation.

The court heard that Bellarmine Mugabe, who is in his 20s, will remain in custody until his next court appearance.

Both men are also accused of defeating the ends of justice, as police are yet to recover the gun allegedly used in the shooting.

Bellarmine Mugabe's lawyer Sinenhlanhla Mnguni declined to comment on his client's position on the allegations, saying he would respond to Reuters later.

A police spokesman said Mali was in hospital after Thursday's shooting.

Robert Mugabe ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years after independence from Britain in 1980. He was ousted in a military coup in 2017 and died in a hospital in Singapore in 2019, aged 95.
