South Africa is strengthening its position as Africa’s leading business events destination as it participates in IDEX Frankfurt 2026, one of the world’s leading global trade shows for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry.
The country is entering the international stage with new momentum after securing the top spot on the continent in the 2025 International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) rankings and hosting 115 international association meetings.
The latest ICCA Globewatch Business Analytics report confirms South Africa's competitiveness globally, with Cape Town maintaining its position as Africa's leading city for international association meetings.
South African Tourism says the country's presence at this week's IEX Frankfurt aims to strengthen partnerships, attract new business and showcase its ability to host large-scale global events.
Corn Koch, Chief Convention Bureau Officer of the South African National Convention Bureau, says the ranking reflects years of sustained investment in infrastructure and industry development.
“South Africa’s continued leadership in the ICCA rankings is a strong reflection of our country’s ability to compete globally while leading the continent.
“It reflects the confidence of international federations in our infrastructure, our people, our professional excellence and our ability to deliver meaningful, world-class events.”
Koch says South Africa is using IEX Frankfurt as a platform to deepen global relationships and establish itself as a forward-looking destination for business events.
“As we launch our participation at this year’s IMAX Frankfurt, we do so proudly as Africa’s top-ranked business events destination, ready to strengthen global partnerships and showcase our diverse national offering.”
Beyond tourism revenue, officials say international conferences held in South Africa are providing long-term benefits, including knowledge exchange, skills development and policy influence.
Events focused on areas such as climate change and health care have helped shape national policies, including renewable energy adoption and public health strategies.
South African Tourism says business events have a wide-ranging impact spanning trade, investment and innovation, helping to grow the country's knowledge economy and strengthen collaboration across industries.
The ICCA rankings also highlight the geographical breadth of the country's hosting capabilities, with cities such as Johannesburg, Durban, Tshwane and Stellenbosch contributing to the national showcase. Emerging destinations such as Sun City, Paarl and Pilanesberg are also gaining popularity in the global meetings market.
Officials say this reflects a growing national presence supported by world-class locations, accessibility and sector expertise across multiple sectors.
South Africa's participation in IMAX Frankfurt is part of wider efforts to boost tourism growth, expand market access and strengthen the country's reputation as a competitive and reliable host for international events.
As global competition for business events intensifies, officials say South Africa is positioning itself not only as the destination of choice, but also as a hub where business, innovation and cultural experiences deliver long-term economic impact.
