SARS says its latest digital upgrades are making compliance faster and easier for taxpayers.

fast refund payment

South African Revenue Service Says there are about Rs 8 billion worth of refunds from people already assessed, and the money is to be paid within the first 72 hours.

She expects more than six million taxpayers to be auto-assessed this filing season, with tax returns pre-populated using information already received from employers, banks, medical plans and retirement funds.

SARS says taxpayers selected for auto-assessment between July 1 and 12 should wait for official communication before reviewing their assessments online or through the SARS MobiApp rather than visiting branches.

Security upgrades added

It has been revealed that new features from its system upgrade include stronger biometric and two-factor security, expanded self-service options, AI-powered assistance through a bot called Lovezy, and the ability to upload supporting documents and receive assessment notices via WhatsApp.

However, SARS is warning taxpayers to be aware of scams.

The Revenue Service has stressed that it will never ask for passwords, one-time PINs or banking details via email, SMS, social media or phone calls.
