American missionary Josh Sullivan, one year after his tragic kidnapping, shares his journey of faith and recovery, exposing the harsh realities of crime in South Africa.

Josh Sullivan had just begun his sermon at his Motherwell church when four armed men walked in.

Thinking it was a robbery, he picked up his iPad to hand it to her. Instead, the American pastor was hit over the head with a pistol and thrown out of the church.

He was kidnapped and banished in front of his congregation. Five days later, he was freed during a police operation in Kwamagxaki, which ended in a shootout, killing his captors.

Sullivan said in his first interview with South African media after his release, “Am I happy they were loaded with bullets? Absolutely.” “They hurt me and my family. They changed the way my family would live forever because of greed. But would I like to see them in heaven one day? Absolutely.”

A missionary from Tennessee has been living in Gkebarha since 2021 and has learned Xhosa. He said he visited “beautiful” South Africa for the first time in 2018. His decision to relocate to the country was made after prayer and reflection.

“We love South Africa. South Africa is a beautiful, beautiful country. I mean, the people are beautiful, the country is beautiful.”
