Unemployment, water provision and failure of local government infrastructure, as well as fear of crime and corruption, have emerged as the biggest factors driving South Africans away from politics and politicians.
When geordyn hill-lewis won As the new DA federal leader on Sunday, 12 April, he laid out a single national priority for the Blue Party: stopping fear from taking over the lives of South Africans.
“We are a country with many crises, but above all the crises there is one crisis that holds our country back. It is the fear with which people wake up every morning.”
“The fear that is with us all the time, when we walk in our neighborhoods and even in our own homes. The fear that our children won't come home from school. The fear of every woman – knowing that they are a target, just because they are a woman.
Hill-Lewis said, “The fear of the elderly person who double-locks the door and prays it will be quiet tonight. The fear of the small business owner who wonders whether they should close their business and go hungry rather than pay security money. The fear of the farmer who goes to sleep knowing that if he asks for help, it is hours away.”
