Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison after being found guilty of illegally possessing a gun and firing a gun in public.

Magistrate Twenette Ollivier delivered her verdict at the East London Regional Court in the town of Kugompo in the Eastern Cape.

Malema's lawyer said he would appeal the decision.

The opposition leader was convicted last year of five charges, including illegal possession of a firearm and discharging a weapon in a public place, over a 2018 incident at a stadium in the Eastern Cape province. According to the allegations, Malema fired several bullets in the air using a semi-automatic rifle during his party's fifth anniversary celebrations in 2018.

The EFF is the fourth largest party in parliament.
