South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has given the go-ahead for the deployment of 2,200 National Defense Force members to tackle crime across the country.

The initiative targets illegal mining and gangsterism by linking defense forces with the South African Police Service in five major provinces.

The proposed expenditure for this operation is expected to reach 823 million rand with a scheduled deployment period from 1 March 2026 to 31 March 2027.
