Five suspects in the kidnapping and murder of senior researcher Steven Gruzd appeared in court on Monday charged with murder and aggravated robbery. Residents of the George Gotch hostel, where Grujd's body was found, say the hostel has become a center of organized crime.
Five suspects in the kidnapping and murder of senior researcher Steven Gruzd appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, March 30, charged with robbery and murder with aggravated circumstances.
Gruzd was the head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Program at the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA). His body was found at the George Goch Hostel in Benrose after he went missing on Friday, 27 March. He is expected to be buried at Westpark Cemetery on Tuesday.
The suspect appeared in court with apparent facial injuries, including black eyes and bruises. Their identities cannot be published due to court orders. Defense lawyer Phumudzo Sadiq pointed to the suspects' injuries, saying they had not yet received medical care. It is not clear at this stage how he sustained his injuries.
The state opposed the suspects' bail on the grounds that they were being charged with a Schedule 6 offence, which included the most serious crimes and that the accused was required to prove “exceptional circumstances” to obtain bail.
