South Africa's hardline opposition leader Julius Malema has been sentenced to five years in prison for opening fire with an assault rifle at a rally eight years ago.

Hundreds of red-clad supporters of the Economic Freedom Fighters, EFF, party leader gathered outside the court for sentencing in the politically charged case.

According to Magistrate Twenette Ollivier, the opposition leader knowingly violated firearms laws by firing a gun in the air at an EFF festival in 2018.

Daily Post reports that Malema, born on 3 March 1981, is a South African politician, Economic Freedom Fighters, founder and leader of the EFF.

He is a communist and nationalist.
