Seven accused allegedly linked to a violent extortion campaign targeting Intercape and other long-distance buses have finally appeared in court, a significant milestone in a case that has exposed the scale and coordination of the criminal extortion network.
InterCape CEO Johan Ferreira has welcomed the arrest of seven suspects accused of wreaking havoc in parts of the Eastern Cape and effectively halting the operation of buses. He expressed hope that this success would lead to further arrests and the successful prosecution of “the perpetrators behind a series of violent attacks, including shooting and stone-throwing as well as other acts of intimidation”.
Six accused were arrested on Sunday, March 29, revealing what investigators believe to be a widespread, possibly structured network rather than extortionists operating in silos. Their names are: Simphiwe Mtshaala, Mzuvukile Mbio, Siyanda Dyanti, Gwendoline Mazele, Sifele Kwaza and Simphiwe Gxumayo.
Bonne Maklala, one of the alleged central figures in the attacks, has been in custody since 9 December 2023. Maklala's name has now been added to six others facing 125 charges under the Prevention of Organized Crime Act, including fraud, extortion and attempted extortion, intimidation, kidnapping, interference with essential infrastructure and money laundering.
