Smartphones have become a gateway to daily life for South Africans – and now the rise of superapps promises to merge transport, payments, shopping and delivery into a single digital ecosystem.

superapp

From health management to tracking daily tasks, technology is at the heart of how people organize their lives, and advances in artificial intelligence are making routine tasks even easier.

Although the concept of “superapp” may not be widely recognized in South Africa, many consumers already use platforms that combine multiple services. For example, mobile banking apps allow users to purchase electricity, airtime and pay fines alongside traditional transactions.

SuperApp is a single mobile platform that brings together multiple everyday services into a single ecosystem.

This means that, instead of switching between different apps for transportation, delivery, payments or shopping, users can access multiple services from a single interface.

Ashif Black, Country Representative, inDrive, explains: “Urban consumers no longer think in terms of apps; they think in terms of outcomes.

“They want to get to work, send a package, pay for something or arrange for delivery quickly. For that reason, platforms that reduce friction and bring those services together in one place are important.”

He argued that mobility platforms are well-positioned to grow into the broader ecosystem.

“Travel is something we all do every day. This also includes the increase in demand for same-day courier services… All of these things are connected to the way people move around and navigate cities.”

integrated platform

The rise of integrated platforms is also linked to South Africa's growing gig economy, where flexible earning opportunities help families supplement income.

By connecting consumers with drivers, couriers and service providers, these ecosystems create structured ways for people to generate income on their own terms.

As urban populations expand and digital adoption deepens, such platforms can increasingly act as digital infrastructure for urban life.
