The South African Insurance Association (SAIA) has warned the public about the insurance risks associated with storing petrol at home.
The association said that amid uncertainty over future fuel supply, some consumers have started storing large quantities of fuel.
The rising prices of petrol and diesel have also given rise to hoarding.

Mosidi Shomang, the association's technical expert, said municipalities only allow storage of up to 25 liters for lawn mower use.
He said insurers would not cover losses arising from illegal or non-compliant activities.
“Storing fuel above local limits is a breach of the law. SAIA advises to avoid storing petrol at home.”
SAIA is urging the public not to store more than 25 liters of fuel and to keep it in well-ventilated areas, away from ignition sources and electrical appliances.
