As South Africa's tax season approaches, taxpayers are encouraged to start preparing early to avoid unnecessary stress, delays and penalties. Organizing your financial documents ahead of time can simplify the filing process and help ensure accurate submissions to the South African Revenue Service (SARS).
SARS has encouraged taxpayers to prepare documentation early to avoid last-minute delays and ensure prompt processing of assessments and refunds.
Getting your documents together before filing season officially opens can help you avoid last-minute rushing, reduce the risk of missing important information, speed up the filing process, prevent delays in receiving a refund, reduce the chance of SARS questions or audits, and ensure that all deductions and claims are submitted correctly.

How to submit your tax return
SARS has made online filing easier through digital platforms, allowing taxpayers to avoid long queues at branches. The main submission methods include SARS e-filing, SARS MobiApp, Auto-Assessment Notifications and appointments at SARS branches (if required).
SARS recommends using online channels wherever possible.
Many taxpayers may receive automatic assessments from SARS between July 7 and 20, 2026.
What does it mean when you are automatically assessed??
SARS will send you an SMS or email notification. Your tax return will already be filled in using information from employers, banks, medical aid and other institutions. You should review all information carefully for accuracy. If everything is correct, no further action will be required. If information is missing or incorrect, you will have to manually modify and submit your return.
