The Nigerian High Commission in South Africa has issued a 10-point advisory to Nigerians living in the country over rising tensions following the alleged coronation of an Igbo traditional ruler in the Eastern Cape province.
On Monday, several vehicles were burnt in the province when protests broke out in the city against the alleged coronation of Solomon Eziko as the traditional leader of the Igbo community.
According to multiple reports, the protest was organized by members of ActionSA, one of South Africa's political parties, who called Eziko's coronation a violation of the province's sovereignty and constitutional order.
Reports indicate that protests turned violent in the town of Kugompo, where protesters reportedly set fire to vehicles and buildings owned by foreign nationals.
In a circular issued on Monday, titled, “Advice to all Nigerians residing in the Republic of South Africa”, the High Commission urged Nigerians to prioritize security and exercise caution amid “apparent tensions” in the country.
The High Commission urged Nigerians to remain security conscious at all times, control their movements and limit interactions with unfamiliar persons.
It advised citizens to maintain a low profile, obey the law, and respect local laws and customs.
As part of the precautionary measures, the High Commission directed Nigerians to “suspend all socio-cultural activities and refrain from making inflammatory statements that may increase tension, especially on social and mainstream media”.
Citizens were warned to stay away from demonstrations or counter-protests and to avoid unnecessary displays of wealth or ostentation.
The advisory encouraged Nigerians to immediately report any threats to life or property to local security agencies.
“All citizens should consult the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria or the Consulate General in Johannesburg for clarification on security measures where necessary,” the statement said.
