The national government has seized complete control National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). Minister of Higher Education and Training Buti Manamela has placed NSFAS under administration due to governance instability within the institution.
The decision follows what the Minister described as a long period of governance challenges, legal concerns and operational weaknesses that have threatened the stability and credibility of NSFAS. Several people resigned from the board, including the chairman, and there were disputes over governance processes and executive appointments.

National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) representatives and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande failed to attend a parliamentary meeting with the portfolio committee for higher education. He was expected to present a transition plan to make up for the failures of the funding scheme.
