SAPS members, working alongside the South African National Defense Force (SANDF), the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and other stakeholders, conducted a demolition drive to curb illegal mining activities in the Ekurhuleni District.

The operation took place on Monday, 4 May at the Allen Scrap Yard in Crystal Park, where seized illegal mining equipment was destroyed to prevent it being put back into circulation.

According to the police, the equipment was seized during previous operations targeting illegal mining across the district.

Items destroyed included firecrackers, electric motors, stampers, steel balls, gas gauges, cutting torches, shovels and steel utensils. The tool was ground and cut into pieces on the spot.

The destruction is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement to disrupt illegal mining networks and reduce related criminal activity in the area.

The operation was led by Ekurhuleni District WISPOL Commander, Colonel Alistair Subramanian, who stressed the importance of continued community cooperation in tackling the problem.

He urged the public to report information that could help police identify and arrest suspects involved in illegal mining.
