As the number of xenophobic attacks rises, Mozambique is expected to become the latest African country to complain to Pretoria about alleged ill-treatment of its citizens. Nigeria and Ghana have already raised the issue with the South African government.

A rising tide of xenophobia is embarrassing South Africa as African countries formally complain about the treatment of their citizens.

Nigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwe on Monday phoned her South African counterpart Ronald Lamola to discuss his government's allegations of xenophobic violence against Nigerians in South Africa, including the deaths of two.

Ghana has also recently formally complained to Pretoria about alleged abuses of its citizens, and Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo was expected to do the same at a meeting with President Ramaphosa in Pretoria on Tuesday, according to sources in Maputo.

Over the weekend, Nigerian Foreign Minister Odumegwu-Ojukwe announced that his government is planning a special evacuation flight from South Africa for Nigerians who wish to flee the country.
