More pre-filled information
One of the biggest improvements this year has been the increased use of prepopulated data.
Information such as some investment income details will already be completed on taxpayers' returns, reducing the amount of manual capturing required and helping to reduce errors.
simple tax return form
SARS has redesigned sections of the Income Tax Return (ITR12) to make them easier to understand.
Taxpayers can expect clearer wording, fewer repetitive questions, and a more user-friendly filing experience.
It aims to help taxpayers complete their returns correctly the first time while reducing confusion and mistakes.
Better Habitat Announcements
New question and date fields have been introduced to help taxpayers accurately indicate their tax residence status.
The additional guidance is intended to ensure that residence information is captured correctly and that taxpayers comply with the relevant tax rules.
Easy Medical Aid Presentations
To assist taxpayers claiming medical aid related benefits, SARS has introduced a dropdown list of approved medical aid schemes.
This change is expected to reduce incorrect entries and improve the accuracy of medical tax credit claims.
WhatsApp services expanded
SARS has significantly expanded the use of WhatsApp as a taxpayer service channel.
Taxpayers who are self-assessed and do not use e-filing or email can now receive their assessment notices (ITA34) through WhatsApp.
The platform can also be used to access notices of assessment, statements of account (SOA) and upload supporting documents directly to SARS.
Advanced e-Filing Platform
The SARS e-filing platform has received a refreshed design and improved navigation tools.
Users will now have instant access to key documents such as their assessment notices, while clear notifications will alert taxpayers about overdue returns and outstanding obligations.
Less delay in verification
A new declaration alert questionnaire has been introduced to identify potential issues before submission of returns.
By helping taxpayers resolve discrepancies in advance, SARS hopes to reduce the number of returns selected for verification and speed up processing times.
An easy filing season
The improvement comes as SARS prepares to issue approximately six million auto-assessments during the 2026 filing season.
The tax authority says these changes are designed to create a simpler, more intuitive experience for taxpayers while helping them fulfill their obligations accurately and efficiently.
With increased automation, improved digital tools and expanded self-service options, SARS is encouraging taxpayers to use its online platforms and digital channels throughout the filing season.
