As the June 15 deadline approaches, some parents have expressed concerns that the centralized placement portal isolates them from well-resourced schools.
On 28 May 2026, the Western Cape Department of Education published its highly anticipated admissions results for Grade R, 1 and 8 learners ahead of the 2027 academic year. What was supposed to be a moment of relief for families has instead created a wave of panic every year, as parents face rejections, opaque allocation criteria and the possibility of their children being kept away from home.
The centralized online system has left many families wondering how placements are actually decided. One parent who spoke to Daily Maverick described the admissions process as “flawed”.
“It used to work much better when parents could contact schools directly for placement. Now it's a very frustrating process that makes no sense because my daughter hasn't been accepted to a school on the next street… How is this possible?” said the mother, who asked to remain anonymous.
