NiDCOM has urged Nigerians in South Africa to close businesses and stay safe as xenophobic attacks are spreading across major cities, spreading fear among foreign nationals.

NiDCOM has urged Nigerian small business owners to keep their doors closed during the upcoming Independence Day period to avoid being caught in the growing unrest.

Demonstrations in cities such as East London and Durban have escalated from protests to targeted attacks on foreign-owned businesses

Since the end of apartheid in 1994, the country has seen repeated anti-foreigner violence, with hundreds killed and thousands displaced.
