South Africans can now get instant tax assistance via WhatsApp message or voice note, after digital tax assistant TaxTim launched TimAI, a South African AI tax assistant, ahead of the July tax season, making instant tax answers free to anyone in the country.

Users can send a message or voice note and receive a clear reply within seconds. For South Africans who conduct most of their daily communications via WhatsApp, and where tax is one of the most widely misunderstood parts of personal finance, this tool removes the two biggest barriers to getting help: high cost and not knowing where to find answers. The voice note option means that taxpayers who find tax forms intimidating, or who prefer to ask formal questions in their own words rather than type, can simply speak their question out loud and receive an answer they can understand.

Unlike typical AI tools, which are trained on the open internet and often confuse South African tax rules with foreign ones, TimAI is trained specifically on South African tax law, official SARS documents and over a decade of actual TaxTim filing data. It's built with guardrails – if it doesn't know the answer, it says so instead of guessing.

“Tax filing is one of the most stressful tasks for South Africans each year, and much of the anxiety comes from not understanding the tax rules,” said Daniel Swigers, Director of Taxtime. “Now that reliable tax answers are just a free WhatsApp message away, it takes away a lot of the fear. You don't even need to be a TaxTim customer to ask your questions via WhatsApp.”

When tax filing season opens on July 13, TimAI will also be available on the TaxTim website to assist customers in completing their returns. There it will be based on the client's own taxtime history and previous filings to provide answers tailored to their specific situation, rather than general guidance. “On WhatsApp, TimAI gives any South African a fast, reliable answer to a tax question,” Swigers said. “On the Taxtime platform, it becomes more personalized. It knows your history with us, so it can give you answers not just about general tax, but about your specific return. It becomes your personalized tax assistant.”

TaxTime, which started in 2011, was launched to make tax filing easier and provide tax assistance to everyone, not just those who can afford an advisor. The company emphasized that TimAI complements, rather than replaces, its team of human registered tax practitioners, who remain available for complex cases that require human judgment.

TimAI is now available on WhatsApp https://wa.me/message/72HRWMKWFAWZB1 Or by sending a message to +27 69 030 8700. The in-platform version will launch when the 2026 tax filing season opens on July 13.
