South Africa's first free pet accident insurance benefit has been launched, aiming to target a market where the majority of pets have no insurance cover despite the rising costs of veterinary care.

PetShop Science, part of the Shoprite Group, says the new offering is designed to make pet insurance more accessible and easier to understand for South African pet owners.

Speaking on CapeTalk, Trevor Paxton, general manager of PetShop Science, said the company had identified a significant gap in the market, with the majority of pets in the country uninsured.

Pet insurance penetration remains low

Paxton said pet insurance coverage in South Africa lags far behind many developed markets. “We saw the writing on the wall when it came to pet insurance,” she said. “There was a lot of undercoverage going on in the market.”

According to Paxton, there are more than 10 million pets in South Africa, yet approximately 99% are uninsured. He said the company wanted to create a simple entry point for pet owners who would otherwise have no cover.

Free Benefits focuses specifically on accidental injuries and emergencies.

What does free pet insurance cover?

Paxton describes the product as an entry-level accident cover designed to help owners deal with unexpected veterinary bills.

He said emergencies often occur outside normal business hours and can include incidents such as snake bites, poisoning or other sudden accidents that require immediate treatment. “This happens when something really unexpected happens,” he said.

The cover is intended to help pet owners access emergency veterinary care for unexpected events rather than ongoing medical conditions.

How can pet owners qualify?

To qualify for the free accident insurance benefit, customers must spend at least Rs 1,000 per month on pet food at PetShop Science stores or through Shoprite's Sixty60 platform when using their Xtra Savings Card.

After this customers will have to join the program through WhatsApp.

Paxton said the sign-up process was intentionally designed to be simple. “You can literally make a choice once,” he said.

He explained that after completing certain WhatsApp prompts, customers get enrolled and can qualify for accident cover in the following month if they meet the spending requirement.

Up to R10,000 in free accident cover is provided for an eligible pet. Currently, only one pet can be added to the policy.

As pets become family members, demand increases

Paxton said there is a growing trend toward “humanization of pets” in the pet industry, with owners increasingly viewing pets as family members rather than mere household animals.

She said the change accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic as more people spent time at home with their pets.

This change in attitudes is also creating greater interest in veterinary care, pet nutrition and insurance products.

More comprehensive cover available

While the free benefit focuses on accidents, Paxton said PetShop Science also offers paid insurance options ranging from accident-only cover to comprehensive medical plans.

He said applications for comprehensive cover are assessed individually, taking into account factors such as breed-specific health risks and existing medical conditions.

Paxton believes there is still a lot of room for growth in the South African pet insurance market.

He pointed to countries like Sweden, where about 60% of pets are insured, and the United Kingdom, where pet insurance penetration is about 30%.

By comparison, South Africa lags far behind, leaving many pet owners facing potentially costly veterinary emergencies.
