Michael Mount Waldorf School learner Sinead de Wet has achieved a major milestone in her sporting career after earning Protea colors and representing South Africa in rhythmic gymnastics.
The Grade 10 student qualified for both the African Championships and World Championships following national trials held at Kempton Park in March. Their success is a significant step forward after narrowly missing out on qualifying last year.
“It was really a surreal moment. Having experienced disappointment before, qualifying this time felt even more rewarding.”

She went on to compete at the African Championships in Pretoria, where the South African team put in a strong performance to take the silver medal, finishing behind Egypt.
Sinead's journey in rhythmic gymnastics began at the age of six. Since then, she has dedicated herself completely to the sport and trains for four hours a day, six days a week.
Balancing his academic work with the demands of specific sports has been one of his biggest challenges. “Learning to balance school and training, and still find time to relax has been difficult.”
Despite this his determination was successful. Reflecting on his journey he stressed the importance of perseverance. “Sometimes not getting what you want the first time leads to even better opportunities later.”
Beyond her individual success, Sinead highlights the value of teamwork.

“Being part of a group has been very special. It's different than competing alone, and I've really appreciated having my teammates with me.”
As she prepares to represent South Africa at the World Championships in Germany in August, Sinead and her team are seeking financial assistance to cover travel and competition costs.
She encourages young athletes to focus not only on performance, but also on their environment. “Surround yourself with people who lift you up. That support system makes a big difference.”
