South African National Parks (SANParks) says teams and stakeholders are working tirelessly to restore access to the Garden Route National Park after persistent rain caused widespread damage to infrastructure.

In the forest section, many roads remain damaged and impassable, while landslides and fallen trees continue to obstruct access roads.

The water level is decreasing but still remains high in some parts of Svartvlei. Recreational activities and hiking trails will remain closed. Accommodation facilities have not been affected, and no cancellations have been reported.

Extreme rainfall of 378 mm was recorded in the Knysna section, resulting in significant infrastructure challenges. Roads including Komsepad and Kraanshoek are blocked by fallen trees and require extensive clearing operations.

The R339 is currently only available for 4×4 vehicles. Power cuts and limited network coverage also continue.

The Thyssen Island Regional Office and Front Office will remain open. A ship became unstable during the flood but poses no environmental threat. Deepwell Campsite and trails are closed.

“Teams are currently clearing large floating debris from the Knysna estuary. Navigational channel markers in the estuary have also been displaced. As a precaution, captains are advised to use caution when navigating in the estuary,” SANParks said on Friday.

In the Tsitsikamma section, conditions have improved with reduced rain and strong winds. The water level of the Groot River in Nature Valley has fallen and work is underway to remove debris from the bridge.

The temporary restaurant structure at Storms River Mouth Rest Camp is temporarily closed after being covered with foam due to flood conditions. All hiking trails and water-based activities will remain suspended.

Nature Valley Camp in the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park is closed while teams assess the extent of damage and continue mop-up operations.

“SANparks teams and stakeholders are working tirelessly to restore access to the Garden Route National Park, repair infrastructure damage and ensure the safety of staff, visitors and neighboring communities.”
