Jordyn Hill-Lewis has launched her bid for the top job at the Democratic Alliance, launching her campaign in Elsies River to cheers from supporters and the backing of senior party figures.
Cape Town Mayor Geordine Hill-Lewis announced her bid for DA federal leader on Friday, 27 February, saying that the DA's upcoming elective congress is a chance for the party to “renew” itself.
It comes as outgoing DA leader John Steenhuisen announced he will not seek re-election at the party's upcoming congress, raising questions about who will succeed him and what the future holds for the party as it heads for a leadership transition and tries to consolidate its support in municipal elections later this year.
“I know, we know, South Africa can work, and I want to help make it work. That is why it is with a sense of pride and excitement that I announce today that I am standing to become the next leader of the DA.
Hill-Lewis said, “This is a decision I have considered carefully. I have no illusions about whether I should be selected for this position. But with a deep love for my country, I will work shoulder to shoulder with all of you to lead our country on the path to prosperity.”
“This leadership election is an opportunity for our party to renew itself again.”
