While many people may be traveling or spending time with loved ones over Easter, hospitals will continue to treat trauma patients, perform surgeries and support individuals undergoing cancer treatment and managing chronic diseases – all of which depend on a steady blood supply.
Therefore, the SA National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing for donors to help it reach the national target of 6,000 units of blood in a single day on March 28.
Each unit of blood donated can save three lives, yet public holidays often put pressure on blood stocks as fewer donors visit collection sites.
SANBS is encouraging both regular donors and first-time donors to take time out on 28 March to help ensure hospitals have the blood they need throughout the Easter period.
“Easter is a time associated with giving and renewal,” said Monique Schreiner, senior manager of donor relations at SANBS.
“By donating blood, South Africans can give a gift that will last far beyond the holidays, the gift of life.
“The donation process takes about 30 minutes, but the impact can last a lifetime.”
real-life stories
For Lazanne Hartwell, blood donors became a lifeline that helped save her young daughter's life. Their 18-month-old daughter was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma in October 2020 and required a blood transfusion shortly after.
Her daughter was given a 200 ml blood transfusion at Donald Gordon Hospital and this experience profoundly changed Hartwell's attitude towards blood donation. Despite being afraid of needles, she is committed to donating blood regularly after realizing how important it can be to families facing medical emergencies.
“I want to thank all blood donors for your generosity; you have contributed to saving our little girl's life.”
Young donors like Sibongeleni Hlongwane, 23, of Pietermaritzburg are already answering that call.
Hlongwane started donating blood at the age of 17 while still in school and continues to donate as a way of giving back to society.
“Donating blood is a meaningful way to help others. I encourage more youth to get involved and participate in community blood drives.”
